You know the one, serve your employer for a lifetime, giving blood, sweat and tears for one day to be informed that you are no longer required. In gangster movies you would be taken to a busy restaurant so you couldn’t make a scene. In most “normal” companies you would be called into your manager’s office to be given the terrible news. However it appears that if you have risked your life in order to protect your country for your whole adult life you will get an e-mail basically saying thanks, but no thanks – http://bit.ly/eUKe0z
It got us thinking about the horror stories that we have heard regarding the laying off procedure. Everyone will remember the Accident Group sending a text to their workforce informing them that they had lost their jobs and would not be paid. However there are numerous examples of people turning up to work to find that their replacement has been hired, oh and they are sat at “soon to be sacked” person’s desk!
Yes it is a difficult situation for any employer. However any manager or director worthy of their position should have the decency to organise a face to face meeting (hopefully after some warnings) with the person they are giving the boot too. Surely it is the only way to conduct business. We all embrace modern technology and communication but we cannot get to stage where people find out they are losing their livelihood on facebook now can we???
Your thoughts and horror stories are welcomed…
