Pancake Day – what’s your poison?

Pancake Day, or ‘shrove Tuesday’, is a day that holds great memories for many households, it’s the first time you experience the magic of breaking an egg, mixing it with milk and flour to create the instantly recognisable (yet nothing like a cake!) roll.

We are sure you have heard the stories about the traditions of pancake making.  Stretching back to Tudor times, a good 500 years after the notion of “shriving” (confessing to sins) it became part of popular religious practice on the last day before the start of Lent.

Many events that were born out of this great day still occur today.  For instance, the villagers of Olney will be out today participating in their famous pancake race which dates back to 1445.

However there are a few modern organisations that love this day too. Tesco’s have announced sales of over 15 million packets of ready-made pancakes this year and Sainsbury’s have sold over 68 tonnes of ready-made mix.  Not bad for a Tuesday hey!

However for most households up and down the country the only thing that will matter today is what you have on your pancakes!   What is your preference? Is it fruit, nutella, syrup, chocolate, jam or just the good old lemon and sugar?

Have we missed any…
