Who would have thought that a referee’s assistant could and would cause so much fuss??? Especially one that had an exemplary game and called a vital decision correctly. With some of the garish attire that Mr Keys has worn over the years you would think that he would definitely refrain from making derogatory comments about anyone!
There has been much debate about what punishment fits the crime. This has ranged from being sacked and never working in the media again to a slap on the wrist (or back) with a dressing down of “you guys, what are we going to do with you?”. At Instinct we are, unusually, somewhere in the middle. We agree that the comments were inappropriate and derisory however to end their careers just doesn’t feel right. We think a personal and public (on Sky Sports) apology is in order and a final written warning.
The presenters (whether they like it or not) are role models to millions of younger viewers who hang off their every word. It is pretty antiquated (even in the laddish world of football) to make comments of this nature. You can imagine that in today’s multicultural society that discrimination like this is non-existent in the playground. It’s just the old boys that need to grow up…
